In a poignant display of solidarity and support, the Israeli Embassy in Yaounde marked this year’s edition of the International Women’s Day by donning yellow ribbons. The move as explained by the embassy, symbolizes the message “bring them home”

This symbolic act as indicated by Mrs. Noga Lewenstein, Chargée d’Affairs at the Israeli Embassy, serves as a reminder of the hostages still held in captivity by Hamas since the terrorist organization’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

The yellow ribbon has long been recognized as a symbol of hope and remembrance, particularly for individuals who were missing or held against their will.By wearing these ribbons, the Israeli Embassy in Cameroon is not only honours the spirit of International Women’s Day but sends a powerful message of support to those who remain in captivity.

The gesture has been appreciated by Cameroonians many of whom expressed their solidarity with the families of the hostages and their hope for the quick release of the hostages.

The embassy’s decision to use this occasion to raise awareness and advocate for the release of the hostages underscores the importance of international cooperation and compassion in times of adversity.

Israel has traditionally participated in the parade. However, in Israel, this year International Women’s Day was commemorated but not celebrated. This is why the Israeli team wore a yellow ribbon. The oversized yellow ribbon made it possible for thoughts to be tilted towards women being held captive in Gaza, subjected by the depraved terrorists of Hamas to the most horrible conditions imaginable.

It is worth noting that on this terrible day, thousands of terrorists invaded more than 30 communities in southern Israel. Hamas had trained them to murder, torture, and kidnap Israelis, and to target women and girls in particular for rape and sexual mutilation.

The International Women’s Rights Day is celebrated every year on March 8, to remember the political, economic, social and cultural achievements of women who have helped shape today’s society, and to question what still needs to be done to achieve a society more respectful of women’s rights.

This year’s theme is : « Investing in women, accelerating the pace ». A theme that was the subject of reflection and debate in a number of fora and panel discussions.
