The Regional Director of UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency for West and Central Africa, Mr. Abdouraouf Gnon-Konde, will visit Cameroon from 28 August to 2 September to strengthen UNHCR’s commitment to working with government and other stakeholders on solutions for refugees and displaced people.

During this visit, Mr Gnon-Konde will talk with top government officials in the Ministries of External Relations, Territorial Administration, and the Economy, Planning, and Regional Development.

Discussions will focus on the implementation of the Yaoundé Declaration on Durable Solutions for Central African refugees, the return of 27,000 Cameroonian refugees from Chad and the voluntary repatriation of Nigerian refugees.

Talks with government officials and humanitarian and development actors, including UN agencies, will highlight the need to improve the inclusion of refugees and internally displaced people in national and local development plans and programmes, given shrinking humanitarian resources.

A key focus of the Regional Director’s stay will be the Far North region of Cameroon, where he will visit the Minawao refugee camp and internally displaced people in Mayo Tsanaga. During engagements with local authorities and humanitarian and development actors, emphasis will be laid on support for the peace and justice systems in the Logone and Chari Division, as well as solutions for over 450,000 internally displaced people in the region.
